My name is Luciana Castagna and I am a counsellor and psychotherapist specialising in supporting people who have experienced trauma, sexual assault, depression, anxiety or overwhelming experiencing that can leave people feeling stuck or unfulfilled with life.  My background qualifications include a BA in Arts, Post Grad qualifications in Counselling, a Diploma in Ego State Therapy, EMDR, and Level and 2 in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy.  I have also undertaken specialised training in working with victims of trauma including Narrative Therapy training, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy.

I have been working in the Health and Community sector for over 25 years in areas such as disability, domestic violence and women’s refuges, the justice system, as well as in the sexual assault and trauma sector.  I have lots of experience in working with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, males and females, as well as same-sex attracted individuals.

Counselling/Psychotherapy frameworks/style

When people come to counselling it can be confusing to understand the different approaches that different therapists use.  During your first counselling session I am will discuss the theories and practice frameworks that influence my work and we can look at ways of supporting you that work best for your situation and preferences.  However, at a glance, the frameworks that I practice from include:

  • Trauma theory which understands how the brain and body are impacted by overwhelming experiences
  • Sensorimotor psychotherapy focuses on how the body stores and manifests trauma and sees that people have a natural capacity to heal and transform after trauma
  • Feminist theory - which sees all people as affected by gender inequalities. Including men
  • EMDR Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing can help to process memories that feel intrusive and stuck
  • Psychodynamic concepts believes that we all have an unconscious and this influences our behaviour
  • ACT defusing and distancing us from our emotions and seeing that we are separate from these states

How I view healing and transformation

I believe very strongly that healing happens within a safe therapeutic relationship and that counselling works best when it is collaborative.  I also understand that our bodies naturally have the wisdom to find a healing path and so my counselling process is guided by the knowledge and expertise individuals bring with them.  I feel that many of the difficulties and symptoms that people attend counselling with have their origins in trauma and negative things that have happened to them.  As such, I don’t believe in ‘diagnosing’ clients, but rather, discussing the causes of their current difficulties and focusing on healing the effects resulting from hurtful experiences.  I firmly believe that: “If we are treated badly then there are likely to be natural impacts that can be misunderstood and negatively labelled. “

Alike many of my clients, and most of us on this planet, I am on a personal journey of discovery and greatly enjoy joining with other people in their own discovery.
